This merit badge concentrates on two-dimensional art, specifically drawing and painting in various media, including an introduction to design applications in the fields of graphic arts and industrial design, history and design principles, and how these fields relate to fine art.
Scout of any rank and any age may participate
This merit badge is taught in two 1.5-hour sessions and a group trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
While there are no prerequisites for this merit badge, there will be homework.
Classes are typically held at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library, 55 Vanderbilt Pkwy, Dix Hills, NY 11746.
Scouts must request permission to participate from their Scoutmaster and obtain a signed blue card.
We are going to attempt to answer the question of "What is art?" Along the way, we will learn about the elements of art, explore what it means to be human, learn about the practical uses of art and potential career opportunities, and increase our appreciate of art by creating some ourselves.
I like to think of art as a language. You have heard the expression, "A picture is worth a thousand words," right? Art helps us say things that we can't with words. Art also helps us tell stories and remember our history, and art is also an essential part of our economy.
In this merit badge, we will learn about the history art (and a little about human history in the process), how to appreciate different forms of art, and using art to improve our lives.
Please note registration is required for all merit badge classes.
Currently I am offering the Art merit badge during the month of June.
Requirement #6 requires a visit to an art museum, and we will be visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for a guided tour.
Transportation will be provided. We will depart from St. Elizabeth's at 9 a.m. and return at approximately 2 p.m. Scouts should pack a bagged lunch and wear their Activity Uniform (Class B).
Families may choose to carpool (in accordance with Youth Protection rules) and meet us at the museum and/or stay afterwards.

There are five things I ask of every scout who participates in my merit badge classes. Be sure to review these before the first class!
Don't see the merit badge class scheduled that you want? Just let me know. Troop leaders may use this form to request a class cohort, too.
