The family is the basic unit of society and is important to both individuals and communities. The world is rapidly changing, making today’s society much more complex than ever before. As Scouts earn this merit badge, they will realize why it is important to know more about family life and how to strengthen their families.
Scout participants are recommended to have earned their Scout rank and be at least 11 years old.
This merit badge is taught in two 1.5-hour sessions.
Prerequisites and homework must be completed to earn this merit badge.
Classes are typically held at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library, 55 Vanderbilt Pkwy, Dix Hills, NY 11746.
Scouts must request permission to participate from their Scoutmaster and obtain a signed blue card.
Our first goal for this merit badge is to define "family". Simple, right? But you know, family doesn't always mean "mom and dad". It will mean different things for different people. And some of the things you need to discuss (requirement #6) might be tough — topics such as substance abuse, finances, handling crises, etc.
This merit badge is going to help you develop the skills to handle family discussions on these issues. Family projects and meetings are a majority of this merit badge. I think requirement #7 is my favorite, "Discuss with your counselor your understanding of what makes an effective parent." This is a great opportunity for you to think about what roles you want to have when you grow up — what changes would you make now to make your life better?
At this time, there are no scheduled classes for Family Life.
There are five things I ask of every scout who participates in my merit badge classes. Be sure to review these before the first class!
Don't see the merit badge class scheduled that you want? Just let me know. Troop leaders may use this form to request a class cohort, too.
